Popcorn for Dinner

Every once in a while, I will skip a meal to enjoy a big bowl of freshly popped popcorn. I am forever grateful to a friend of mine who introduced me to the Whirley Pop, or the best way to make perfectly popped popcorn at home.

What you’ll need: olive oil, popcorn kernels, Whirley Pop, and toppings of your choice.

Directions:

  1. Start by warming one tablespoon of olive oil on medium heat with a couple of popcorn kernels (in the Whirley Pop).
  2. Once the first kernel pops, add the rest of the kernels (usually about 1/2 cup).
  3. Continually turn the wooden handle until there are two seconds between pops (no more than 3 minutes total). That’s when I know my popcorn is ready for seasoning.

One of my favorite toppings is truffle salt, which I just sprinkle on top. After attending a salt tasting at Bazaar Spices I learned about a delicious spice blend that also goes well with popcorn: Za’atar. This spice blend consists of sesame seed, sumac, salt, thyme, and other spices.

If you decide to invest in a Whirley Pop, you’ll be able to experiment will all kinds of spice blends. I also love popcorn with a little kick, for example a mix of paprika, garlic powder, cumin and cayenne pepper. Let your imagination run wild.

Even dessert popcorn, such as salted chocolate popcorn, is the perfect way to end a night. Bon appétit
