Salted Chocolate Popcorn – “Ready To Pop” For A Baby Shower

Over the weekend, a good friend of mine had a baby shower (she’s expecting a baby girl in July).

I was so excited to attend my first baby shower that once I received a “Save the Date,” I started thinking about what to bring to the party. When I found these adorable “ready to pop popcorn” boxes online, I had a plan.

I frequently make fresh popcorn with my amazing Whirley Pop. All I had to do was add some chocolate to the popcorn and I’d have the perfect gift. Here are all the ingredients you will need to make dark chocolate, salted popcorn:

The original recipe can be found here.

Fills 10 boxes of “ready to pop popcorn”

2 tablespoons of olive oil
2/3 cup popcorn kernels
6 squares (or about 7.8 ounces) of dark chocolate (for example: Trader Joe’s Pound Plus imported from Belgium)
1 teaspoon sea salt

You’ll have to make the popcorn in two batches. In the Whirley Pop, pour a tablespoon of olive oil and 1/3 cup of popcorn kernels. Turn the heat on the stove to medium. Once the kernels start popping, twist the handle until you can count one to two seconds between pops.

While you prepare the second batch of popcorn, mix 1/2 teaspoon of salt with the chocolate. Heat the chocolate in the microwave, 30 seconds at a time. Stir the chocolate slowly between each 30 seconds. As soon as all the chocolate squares are melted, remove the chocolate from the microwave.

Spread the popcorn out onto a baking sheet and pour the chocolate over the popcorn.  Sprinkle the rest of the salt (1/2 teaspoon). Let the popcorn sit for about an hour, allowing the chocolate to harden.

Voila! You have a quick and easy baby shower gift.

Other notes:

– Don’t try to dye the chocolate if you want the popcorn to be pink (or blue) for a baby shower. I’ve been told it is extremely difficult to color chocolate so purchase dyed chocolate in advance from a website like this one.

– Chocolate is not the best dessert to transport in the summer as it will melt quickly.

– If you don’t own a Whirley Pop, you can still make popcorn in a pot on the stove, but I strongly recommend purchasing a Whirley Pop. You will thank me.

– This is a good dessert to make for people from all cultures as it’s not too sweet and it will satisfy a lot of palates.
